Christmas on Skid Row
Every Christmas, thousands of people on Skid Row wake up on Christmas morning hungry and hopeless. Last year, at our 12th annual event, we made sure they woke up to warm smiles and a hot meal instead.
We also handed out care packages with essentials like toilet paper, toothbrushes and toothpaste, body wash, and warm socks.
Because of the generosity and hard work of our team of volunteers, we were able to:
Serve 600 breakfasts and 100 whole pies—over the years, we’ve served over 7,000 breakfasts!
Distribute 100 pairs of shoes
Give out 75 blankets
Hand out 150 hygiene packs
Spanning only 4 square miles, Skid Row has 4,400 people experiencing homelessness, 2,695 of them unsheltered, according to the 2022 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count.
Of the those experiencing homelessness in Skid Row:
36% reported a serious mental illness
33% reported a substance abuse disorder
25% reported physical disability
13% reported a developmental disability
38% reported having experienced domestic violence or intimate partner violence
An estimated 1,900 people experience chronic homelessness
About 56% of people experiencing homelessness in Skid Row identify as Black/African American, while 24% identify as Hispanic/Latinx—attesting to the disproportionate representation of people of color among the homeless population
Skid Row also has the County’s highest number and proportion of overdose deaths
Our 2023 event was incredible!
A massive thank you to everyone who donated and volunteered to make this day a success!
